Some of the best VFX advice you'll ever get is "you don't need VFX for that."
A practical element. A different lens. A foreground piece. A camera move that hides the seam. Solved on the day for almost nothing, and it'll look better than the CG version because it is real.
This is the unglamorous heart of the job. A studio that's only paid to add shots has every reason to add shots. A studio that's paid to make the film work will happily talk you out of half of them.
Know which one you're hiring.
Two things to take away:
- Practical-first usually looks better and costs less.
- Be wary of anyone who never subtracts shots. The right partner protects your budget, not their shot count.
